Engaged to conduct professionally at the age of only 22 and just months after completing his bachelor’s degree, Ryan’s dynamic conducting, engaging persona and deeply held passion for the arts have allowed him to steadily build a robust career conducting professional orchestras ever since. At the age of 29, Ryan was selected as a winner of the Vienna Philharmonic’s prestigious Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors. He spent the summer of 2014 in residence at the Salzburg Festival alongside the Vienna Philharmonic where he was able to engage with renowned conductors Ricardo Muti, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniele Gatti and Mariss Jansons. Ryan has recently been selected as the new Music Director for Fresno Grand Opera following his highly successful guest conducting debut at FGO for their premiere of A Streetcar Named Desire alongside award-winning Stage Director Brad Dalton in early 2015.
In addition to his recent appointment as Music Director of Fresno Grand Opera, Ryan is the Music Director of Townsend Opera, the Associate Conductor for the Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Music Director for the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra; with whom he made his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall in 2014. Ryan is also Resident Conductor of the Music in the Mountains Summer Festival in Nevada County, California. He previously served as a Staff Conductor for the Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute (BASOTI), and the Opera Academy of California.
As well as being named a 2014 Ansbacher Fellow with the Vienna Philharmonic, Ryan recently attended the Eastman School of Music’s 2015 Summer Conducting Institute featuring the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; in August he will be attending the Aurora Conducting Masterclass and Seminar to study under Maestro Kurt Masur in Trollhättan, Sweden. Ryan has previously participated in conducting masterclasses at Oregon State University with Master Teacher Neil Varon, as well as Maestro Kenneth Kiesler in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Widely praised for his tireless work ethic, natural poise, and impassioned, inspired performances, Ryan continues to connect deeply with orchestras and audiences alike, and has proven to be an emerging dynamo on the podium.
