This was the inaugural event of the Opera Remix Initiative, which was launched to begin experimenting with how opera can engage with the 21st century. The goal of the first event was to show non-opera goers that opera music is not the intimidating art form that many believe it to be. To accomplish this goal, we paired some of the best opera arias in the repertoire with some of the best classic rock tunes, all orchestrated for a 15 piece rock orchestra that combined elements from standard orchestras and rock bands and sung by opera and pop singers. We also created a much more relaxed and personally engaging environment for the concert, breaking the tradition of audience members quietly and passively experiencing an arts presentation.
The event started with a street party in front of the State Theatre, where local restaurants served Dodger Dogs and sliders, a DJ played classic rock and opera, and participants socialized. After the concert, participants hung out at a karaoke after party in the lobby of the theater, ate desserts provided by the Opera League, and sang some of their favorite classic rock tunes.
This turned out to be a groundbreaking event for Townsend Opera, featuring the most diverse crowd in the history of the company. Participants had a good time, and most importantly, listened to both opera and classic rock on the same level, and appreciated it for what it was: good music of any kind.
